Mia Hope (b. 2001) is an emerging interdisciplinary artist, photographer, writer and performer based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a biracial Japanese-Canadian, she takes on a cross-cultural and feminist framework in her studies and craft. She is interested in cultural liberation, inclusivity and diversity for those underrepresented in the arts community. She primarily expresses herself through dance, visual art and textile work. Her main bodies of work featured consist of photography projects including street, commercial and editorial works. Her creative process is often informed by nostalgia, cultural discourse and feminine identity. Mia is interested in curatorial practices and concepts both within and outside the gallery space and continues to explore ways in which artists creatively exchange and collaborate across disciplines.
Mia expects to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in the Art, Performance & Cinema Studies Program at Simon Fraser University in 2023. She was recently accepted into the SFU Berlin Field School of Contemporary Arts Program, where she had the opportunity to create, document and immerse herself in the local and international arts community. She has attended and gained greater inspiration for the contemporary arts from international exhibitions, including Art Basel Hong Kong (2019), Berlin Biennale (2022) and Documenta 15 (2022).
